Photo Tips: Inner-Tube Headshot

Photo Tips: Inner-Tube Headshot. This photo is our 4th of July greeting to you. In it, the model’s head and arms appear to be surrounded by an American flag. How did we achieve this effect? We did it by draping decorative flag bunting (not an actual flag) around an inner-tube style swimming pool float and having the model use it to float in the pool outside our photography studio. As the model leans on the front of the inner-tube, the back of the inner-tube rises to show the flag material behind his head, literally surrounding the model.
We’ve applied this technique with success using a variety of materials such as blankets, sheets, bathrobes, and other large pieces of cloth. We’ll bring you more examples in the near future.
For photographers who do not have access to a swimming pool, the same effect can be achieved by draping wet material around an inner-tube and supporting the back of the inner-tube so that it rises above the back of the model’s head.
The model in this photo is Payton Brady. For Payton’s bio (click here). To locate all posts with photographs of Payton, type “Payton” in the Search box on the right.
