Wardrobe: Athletic Supporter

Wardrobe: Athletic Supporter. Arguably, the quintessential male wardrobe item is the athletic supporter, commonly referred to as a “jockstrap.” According to the Bike Athletic Company, they were first manufactured in 1874 to provide support for bicycle jockeys riding the cobblestone streets of Boston. Using athletic supporters as a wardrobe item in male portraiture, poses two problems. The first is to produce an image that has composition and “context” that distinguish the portrait from a photograph for a typical underwear advertisement. The second is to use the athletic supporter in such a way that a sensual but not overly sexualized image is achieved. We think that we have overcome these problems in the two photos associated with this post.
The model in these two photos is Payton Brady, who appeared in Season 3 of the reality television program Janice Dickinson’s Modeling Agency (Oxygen Network). Payton just finished filming for Season 4 while living in Janice Dickinson’s Beverly Hills Mansion with nine other models.
Prints of the first photo above are available through the purchase option on our main Web site (click here). Prints start at just $9.99 for an 8 x 12 photo.

Both photos of Payton Brady in the Bike Supporters are tastefully done. I prefer the one in the white supporter because your photographer has caught the very sensual fold of his tender young skin just above where the waist strap imposes its taughtness, coupled by the elevated level of his left leg, which further dramatizes his cleft at the top of his thigh just to the front of his rounded buttock. Wow! How beautifully your photgrapher has captured the youthful suppleness of his skin and the curly-ques of pubic hairs escaping the containment of the pouch restate the new status of emerging manhood. Lovely!
